In Italian the name for this dish is “porta resto.” They have been used for decades and are usually found by the cash register in cafes. Instead of handing change directly to the customer, the merchant places the change and receipt in this tray. The porta resto can also be used to hold pocket change, keys, mail, paper clips, jewelry, watches, or to serve crackers, olives, and other antipasti.
